Vessel movement in the Indian Inland waterways has not been studied thoroughly. The inland waterways in India
are generally neglected until now. Although the proportion of traffic carried through IWT is a fraction of that carried by road and rail , but the rapidly increasing importance of river transport cannot be underestimated. Due to the small volume of trade, not much research investment has been done in this region. There are many impediments to the growth of IWT like non-availability of navigational aids, non-availability of low draft high technology vessels. There are many advantages of investing in IWT in India, for example, diversion of one billion tonne-km of cargo to IWT mode will reduce transport fuel costs by 5 million USD and overall transport costs by 9 million USD . These profits will increase considerably if navigational aids are revamped in the region.
